Kim manages J&J-owned farms in Palm Beach County. Originally, Kim learned to farm in the muck lands surrounding Lake Apopka (muck is a very dark soil, rich in organic material). His father was a muck farmer on an 8,000-acre farm. Kim’s grandfather, who was a celery grower in Southern Georgia, was actually a muck-farming pioneer when he moved to Florida shortly after World War I.
“My grandfather was a very ingenious guy; you pretty much had to be in those days,” Kim says. “He made a self-propelled spray cart, and he came up with a chain mole that makes little holes in the ground to help irrigate and drain the soil. Muck land has a real bad habit of not drying out.”
Kim continued the family tradition of farming, growing tomatoes for a commercial farm outside of Orlando, and he says he enjoys the challenge posed by growing tomatoes. “Tomatoes are very labor intensive. I like it because it is never boring.” Kim also grows Green Bell Pepper, Squash and Cucumbers for J&J.
